Congratulations to Derek Neo and Ervin Lai for being awarded Sembawang Shipyard’s Green Wave Environmental Care Competition, Commendation Award!

Derek Neo and Ervin Lai together as a team, represented NTU in this year Sembawang Shipyard’s Green Wave Environmental Care Competition 2011. The Green Wave Environmental Care Competition aims to involve the community at large, particularly the students, to participate in learning about caring, protecting, maintaining and positively utilising our environment so that the community may, either individually or together as a community, contribute towards the conservation and improvement of our environment for the sustainable development of Singapore. This year, Derek and Ervin submitted a project, ‘Popcorn Concrete’, on the utilization of an environmentally friendly pervious concrete to help create a more sustainable future for Singapore. Derek and Ervin’s project was one of the 12 projects that was shortlisted out of 100 over entries for the final round of assessment for the tertiary category. Their project was highly regarded by the panel of judges and was awarded with the Commendation Award, with a prize award of $500.

Derek and Ervin’s project on pervious concrete was based on their Final Year Project under the supervision of Visiting Associate Professor R. Sriravindrarajah. The project investigated the development of an environmentally friendly concrete known as pervious concrete with reduced cement content that easily allows water to flow through. This special type of concrete used for pavement construction drains a significant amount of stormwater water.

Their research serves to addresses various environmental issues such as global warming due to the increase emission of carbon dioxide by reducing the cement content by 70% with the use of ground granulated blast-furnace. In addition, the sandless pervious concrete developed utilised recycled concrete aggregate from demolition waste. It is without a doubt that the use of this pervious concrete is in line with providing Singapore with a sustainable concrete construction and complementing any future flood control measures to combat flash flood in Singapore, therefore meeting the aim of the Green Wave Environmental Care Competition 2011.
