Congratulations to Professor Ng Wun Jern for receiving the Prestigious Engineering Achievement Award (PEAA) conferred by the Institution of Engineers’ Singapore (IES). The award-winning project “Mitigation of Pollution at Kandy Lake and Mid-Canal, Sri Lanka” is a collaboration between the Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI, Singapore) and the University of Peradeniya’s Faculty of Engineering (UOP, Sri Lanka), supported by the Lien Foundation. Prof Ng is the project’s Principal Investigator and Advisor. He was also NEWRI’s Executive Director at the time of award, and Director of NEWRI’s community development arm, NEWRIComm, which administer the project.
World Engineers Summit (WES)’s Guest-of-Honour, Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, presented the annual awards to the winning teams. In his opening speech, Mr Masagos gave special mention to the project, for its contribution to the people of 400,000 residents living in Kandy. The IES PEAA Award gives recognition to achievements of organisations or persons responsible for an outstanding engineering project with significant contribution to the general public, society & nation with considerations of the commercial and social impact delivered.
NEWRI was proud to be one of the 12 engineering projects winners selected from a record-setting of 37 entries spanning the healthcare, defence, manufacturing, chemical, energy and environmental industries. These projects proved their merits to a judging panel of industry experts in (1) resourcefulness in the planning and solving of design problems; (2) pioneering use of materials and methods; (3) innovations in planning, design and construction as well as (4) unique aspects and aesthetic values. The team behind each winning project received a commemorative plaque and individual certificates.
“The winners of the Prestigious Engineering Achievement Awards 2017 embody engineers’ spirit of determination and desire to improve lives. I would like to commend all winners for their devotion in breaking through boundaries to achieve greater engineering excellence. Through the awards, IES hopes to recognise engineers for effecting huge positive changes in our lives and inspire the younger generation to do the same and more,” said Er. Edwin Khew, President of IES.
