Civil engineer who took the plunge and never took “No” for an answer
In recognition of his extraordinary milestones with Prime Structures
Engineering Pte Ltd, Nanyang Technological University is proud to present
Mr Sonny Bensily with the Nanyang Alumni Achievement Award.
In 1995, after a decade in the workforce, Mr Bensily took the plunge
and started Prime Structures Engineering Pte Ltd. He was inspired by
his father, who himself had started a construction business. Though his
father’s business had eventually failed, Mr Bensily learnt that failure is
not permanent. He said in an interview: “I saw that we grew up poor,
but we still survived, so I was willing to take the risk.”
Today, Prime Structures Engineering has expertise in four key
areas: Building Envelopes, Customised Structures and Art Structures,
Security Facades and Interior Fit-Outs. It has over 100 employees from
many countries including India, Ireland, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar,
Philippines, Sri Lanka and England.
Prime Structures Engineering was involved in the construction of some
of Singapore’s most iconic architecture such as Changi Airport Terminal 3
and Marina Bay Sands (MBS). For MBS, Prime Structures Engineering was
involved in the construction of the Ned Khan Art Wall, the podium,
the canopy; and for special mention the Skypark – the company successfully
cladded the belly of the ship-like platform on top of the three hotel
towers which was 57 storeys above ground level.
The involvement and successful completion of construction in MBS
allowed Prime Structures Engineering to build an international network
and reputation, providing it the springboard to venture overseas and
participate in projects such as the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, the
Cancer Centre in Brunei and the casino resort and hotel complex of
Okada Manila in the Philippines.
As Prime Structures Engineering’s Managing Director, Mr Bensily has
received many accolades including the Singapore Indian Business Leaders
Award (2016) and Singapore Successful Entrepreneur (2010). His
company was placed 199 on the Financial Times’ FT List of 1000 High-
Growth Companies Asia-Pacific 2018 and has also been a two-time winner
at the Enterprise 50 Awards, one of the top honours for privately owned
local companies in Singapore.
A proud alumnus of NTU, Mr Bensily has given generously via the Sonny
and Diana Bensily Bursary and Class of 1985 Pioneer Fund. He has also
spoken at the Distinguished Alumni Forum in 2012.
